Global Research and Development Center Awarded Zero Waste to Landfill Certification

The Bridgewater, NJ facility has been recognized by GCBI, a leading sustainability and health certification and credentialing body in the United States

Nestlé Health Science is committed to embedding sustainability across our business which includes the adoption of sustainable waste management and waste reduction practices. As a result of these efforts, we have achieved Gold-level TRUE (Total Resource and Use Efficiency) certification for zero waste practices at our Global Research and Development Center in Bridgewater, NJ – a center of innovation and technology for our business.

Administered by Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI), TRUE helps facilities measure, improve and recognize zero waste performance by encouraging the adoption of sustainable waste management and reduction practices, which contribute to positive environmental, health and economic outcomes.

“Nestlé Health Science recognizes that by pursuing zero waste they are helping us build a sustainable future for all,” said Peter Templeton, President and CEO of U.S. Green Building Council and GBCI. “Waste impacts all facets of business and changing the way that we use resources will deliver public health benefits, reduce our environmental impact and advance a greener economy.”

To achieve certification, the team took several actions throughout our Bridgewater operations including:

  • Partnering with a waste hauler to collect and process organic materials to ultimately power a local third-party facility, the Rahway Valley Sewerage Authority
  • Replacing all disposable service ware items with washable glasses and mugs
  • Recycling plastic film and personal protective equipment for upcycling into items like lumber, floor tiles and footing in playgrounds and athletic fields and to eliminate over 1 ton of waste annually
  • Empowering employees to reduce hazardous waste by providing onsite collection programs for items like batteries

“Our extensive waste reduction practices across our facilities are one of the many ways we seek to make a positive impact on people and the planet," said Christiane Baker, Sustainability Lead for Nestlé Health Science U.S. "This TRUE recognition, along with our recent B CorpTM Certification for several of our businesses, further demonstrates our deep commitment to supporting people and the planet and motivates us to strive for more in 2023.”
